Job Description

GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail is seeking to appoint an outstanding Head of Year 7 from August 2026. The successful candidate will lead the Year 7 cohort, ensuring a smooth transition into secondary school and promoting high standards of behaviour, wellbeing and academic progress.

Job Purpose:

The Head of Year 7 leads the academic and pastoral development of students in their first year of secondary school. The role focuses on establishing strong routines, high expectations and a supportive environment where pupils develop confidence, independence and positive attitudes to learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the pastoral care and wellbeing of the Year 7 cohort.
  • Promote high standards of behaviour, attendance and engagement.
  • Lead and manage the transition programme from Year 6 to Year 7.
  • Monitor academic progress and coordinate interventions where needed.
  • Support and line manage Year 7 form tutors.
  • Build strong relationships with parents and communicate effectively.
  • Promote a positive year group culture through enrichment and student participation.
  • Track attendance, behaviour and wellbeing, ensuring timely support.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to safeguarding and compliance.
  • Contribute to whole-school priorities and initiatives.

Skills

  • Proven leadership experience within a school setting.
  • Strong understanding of pastoral care and student development.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead and support staff effectively.
  • Recognised teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent).
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; further qualifications desirable.
