Job Description
The Head of Mathematics provides strategic leadership and oversight for the Mathematics department across the school, ensuring excellence in teaching and learning within both the International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes (including International Baccalaureate frameworks such as PYP, MYP, and DP) and the American curriculum. The role involves curriculum development, instructional leadership, staff management, student achievement monitoring, and alignment with international best practices.
The Head of Mathematics fosters a collaborative culture, drives academic innovation, and ensures high standards of student progress and attainment across all grade levels.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership & Vision

Develop and implement a clear vision for Mathematics across the school.

Ensure alignment of IB and American curriculum standards vertically and horizontally.

Lead curriculum review cycles and ensure compliance with IB and accreditation requirements.

Promote inquiry-based, conceptual, and skills-driven mathematics learning.
2. Curriculum & Instruction
-
Oversee planning, delivery, and assessment of Mathematics across all divisions.

Ensure alignment with IB programme standards and practices and American standards (e.g., Common Core or state standards, as applicable).

Monitor unit planning, assessment design, and differentiation strategies.

Support integration of technology and innovative pedagogical practices.
3. Teaching & Learning Excellence
-
Coach and mentor mathematics teachers to improve instructional quality.

Conduct lesson observations and provide constructive feedback.

Lead professional development initiatives within the department.

Promote data-driven instruction and analysis of student performance.
4. Assessment & Student Achievement
-
Oversee internal and external assessment processes.

Monitor IB Diploma Programme mathematics results and other standardized test outcomes.

Analyze student data to identify trends and implement intervention strategies.

Ensure consistent grading practices across grade levels.
5. Staff Leadership & Management
-
Lead recruitment, induction, and appraisal of mathematics staff.
-
Foster collaboration, teamwork, and professional growth within the department.

Chair departmental meetings and contribute to whole-school leadership meetings.

Manage departmental budget and resources.
6. Student Support & Engagement
-
Promote enrichment opportunities such as math competitions, clubs, and academic challenges.

Support students in course selection and academic planning (including IB Mathematics pathways).
-
Ensure inclusive practices for diverse learners, including EAL and SEN students.
7. Compliance & Accreditation
-
Ensure documentation and practices align with IB requirements.

Contribute to accreditation processes and school improvement planning.

Maintain high standards of academic integrity.
Skills
Qualifications & Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or related field (Master’s preferred).
-
Valid teaching certification.
-
Significant experience teaching IB Mathematics (MYP and/or DP preferred).
-
Experience with American curriculum standards.
-
Proven leadership experience in a school setting.
-
Strong understanding of curriculum design, assessment, and data analysis.
