Job Description
Job Purpose
The Assistant Librarian will support the School Librarian in the day-to-day running of the school library, helping to create a welcoming, organised and engaging environment that promotes reading, research and independent learning across the school.
This is an entry-level position and would be particularly well suited to a candidate with previous experience as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) who is looking to develop their career within a school library setting.
Key Responsibilities

Support the School Librarian with the daily organisation and smooth running of the library.

Assist students and staff in locating books, resources and other learning materials.

Support the issuing, returning, shelving and organisation of library resources.

Help maintain accurate library records and ensure resources are appropriately labelled and catalogued.

Assist with creating attractive library displays and promoting new books, reading initiatives and school events.

Support students during scheduled library lessons and independent study periods.

Encourage a positive reading culture and help students develop confidence in using library resources.

Assist with stock checks and identifying damaged, missing or outdated resources.

Support school-wide literacy initiatives, book fairs, author visits and other library events.

Ensure the library remains a safe, welcoming and inclusive learning environment.
Skills Description
Candidate Profile

Previous experience as a TA, HLTA or in a similar school-based support role is highly desirable.

A genuine interest in books, reading, literacy and supporting young people.

Strong organisational and communication skills.

Confident working with students across different age groups.

Basic IT skills and a willingness to learn library management systems.

A positive, proactive and collaborative approach.

No previous librarian experience is required; training and support will be provided.
