Job Description

At GEMS World Academy, Abu Dhabi, we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive, dynamic learning community where every student feels valued, challenged, and supported. Situated on Al Reem Island, our curriculum blends the IB framework with the National Curriculum for England, offering the PYP and MYP, IGCSE from FS1 to Year 11, with plans to grow to Year 13.

We are currently seeking an experienced and inspirational Assistant Headteacher-Curriculum and Assessment (Primary) to join GEMS World Academy – Abu Dhabi, beginning August 2026. Reporting to the Head of Primary, this senior leadership role is responsible for driving academic excellence, leading curriculum and assessment, and fostering a supportive and inclusive school culture.

Key Responsibilities

  •          Driving the improvement in standards of the primary school through providing strategic leadership of all aspects linked to curriculum & assessment.
  •          Developing practice linked to assessment, data analysis and curriculum mapping across the primary school by designing and embedding innovative approaches to inspire all students and to impact on raising standards for all – including SEND and Gifted and Talented students.
  •          Monitoring and quality assurance of assessment practice and curriculum design to accelerate student performance.
  •          Develop and deliver an effective professional development programme tailored to the specific needs of staff and targeted areas for whole school development, including the development of middle leaders.
  •          Ensuring student learning is at the centre of strategic planning and resource management, leading to the highest possible academic outcomes for all.
  •          Playing a key role in School Self-Evaluation ensuring agreed actions are effective, timely and positively impacting on student outcomes.
  •          Working with Curriculum Leaders to set robust targets and Annual Action Plans that improve student outcomes.
  •          Sharing the responsibility for the management of the school and contributing to the consultative and decision-making processes.
  •          Supporting whole school policy decisions, contributing to their implementation and review.
  •          Actively promoting the school and liaising with outside agencies as necessary, representing the Principal, the school or GEMS as appropriate.

Developing self and others success

  •          Lead continuing professional development of staff, including teaching staff and curriculum leaders.
  •          Supporting other members of the school’s executive and senior leadership team in planning and delivering whole school professional development.
  •          To develop a structured programme of advice and support to improve practice, through a coaching and modelling approach.
  •          Establish and maintain effective and appropriate professional working relationships at all levels.
  •          Lead and support staff in developing and sustaining positive working relationships within and across phases.
  •          Lead and undertake leadership and subject level performance management reviews
  •          Where appropriate, support the interview/selection process for teacher recruitment and    ensure effective induction of new staff.
  •          Actively pursuing your own professional development as an aspiring Executive Leader.

  • Ability to think and plan strategically in alignment with school vision, ethos, and values
  • Strong pedagogical understanding to drive student progress
  • Knowledge of best practice across both primary and secondary phases
  • Ability to handle challenging situations and professional conversations with empathy and sensitivity
  • In-depth understanding of the wider educational landscape, including current national policies, educational issues, and global trends
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to adapt and manage professional relationships effectively
