Job Description

Job Purpose

 To be responsible for the health, hygiene and wellbeing of students and staff of the school; ensuring the schools complete compliance with regulations and rulings of the Ministry of Health.

Job Scope

 

All Health requirements of students and staff, inclusive of preparing all staff on preventative hygiene procedures; administering of first-aid; record keeping; and informative instruction where required.

Internal & External Interactions

Internal:  The Superintendent, SLT, all staff of the section.

External:  As designated by the HOS.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Embrace and encourage the ethos and standards of excellence as defined in the GEMS Core Values.
  • Ensure that students and parents adhere to, and are well informed of immunization programs as per Ministry of Health guidelines.
  • Monitor the maintenance of a minimum level of cleanliness and hygiene within the school, particularly in areas such as the cafeteria, washrooms and swimming pools.
  • Be available to students and staff to address their immediate medical needs, providing a source of medical advice.
  • Maintain comprehensive medical records of all students as regulated by the Ministry of Health.
  • Manage and guide the school nurses so that they function optimally, in the best interests of the students, staff and school.
  • Keep up to date with current medical practices and regulations, as prescribed by Governmental authorities.
  • Ensure the GEMS policies, procedures, and codes of conduct are followed at all times.
  • Initiate effort and energy beyond the typical work day, where the tasks require additional commitment.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Perform other duties as requested by direct & dotted reporting line managers / supervisors.
  • Plans and conducts comprehensive Physical/ Medical examination of students as per school health record.
  • Screening the student for all body system, records all findings in school health record, specifying any defect or abnormalities.
  • Refers and follows up students with abnormal finding to the Health Center/ Clinics of DHA or to their family through “Parents Notification Form”
  • First Aid Care / Emergency care
  • Writes standing order of drugs/ treatments, which can be administered to the students by Nurse in the absence of the Doctor.
  • Steps to prevent and control of contagious diseases
  • Health Education to students
  • Maintenance of records and reports
  • ICD coding
  • Weekly reports of major and minor accidents to SLT
  • Share in Planning, assessing and attending immunization session, which will be conducted in school to be available for any untoward reaction including anaphylaxis due to immunization. 

Skills

 

Qualifications / knowledge:

MD in Pediatrics, preferably with a Ministry of Health license. Current, up-to-date knowledge of worldwide medical and healthcare practices.

 

Skills:

 Excellent English language skills including reading, writing, speaking and listening.  Positive interpersonal and communication skills.  The ability to remain calm in cases of emergency and cope with a degree of pressure at peak times.  A logical and relaxed individual able to interact with a variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures.

 

Experience:

A minimum of 3 years experience in a similar position.
