Job Description

  1. Organize technical support to the science department including assisting in practical classes and demonstrations, preparing resources, assembling apparatus and clearing away promptly after each lesson.
  2. Give technical advice to teachers, technicians and pupils / students.
  3. Carry out risk assessments for practical activities.
  4. Maintain an orderly working environment in the prep rooms and labs.
  5. Take a role in the design, development and maintenance of specialist resources and/or long-term projects and
    offer professional guidance, assistance and support to pupils & teachers on the practical aspects of the
    curriculum.
  6. Design, construct and modify apparatus.
  7. Set up and care for plant and animal collections.
  8. Prepare standard solutions, etc, purify chemicals, treat waste.
  9. Keep up to date with health & safety requirements and developments in practical science by ensuring that
    relevant literature is available and attend relevant courses.
  10. Give health & safety advice to technical staff, teachers and students. Disposal of hazardous waste materials.
    Organise the storage of hazardous materials in appropriate secure conditions. Monitor and review of both
    health & safety procedures and information resources.
  11. Check fume cupboards, pressure vessels and first-aid kits; carry out electrical and other safety checks, etc.
  12. Organise, store and check the condition of chemicals and equipment. Repair/replace equipment as needed.
  13. Ensure the department’s resources are maintained to the required standards.
  14. Liaise with school operations tea where needed to ensure labs are clean and equipment works.
  15. Ensure the availability of suitable materials and equipment and suggest alternatives for suitability and
    economy.
  16. Maintain stock control and maintain appropriate records.

Skills

  1. Education, Training and Qualifications:
    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.

Knowledge and Experience:

  1. Knowledge of Chemistry and Physics, Safety in a lab, working with practical equipment and able to prepare chemicals for practical
  2. Well organised and proactive.
  3. Worked in a practical setting of a school/hospital/laboratory/industry.
